Midnight Messages & Mysterious Messengers

Finding joy, meaning, and stories that connect us

Dear Friend,

It was such a delight to join my friend Tzivia on Friday morning to talk about finding wisdom, joy, and sustenance.

Journey With The Seasons by Gabrielle Kaplan-Mayer is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.

At first, it might seem like a counterintuitive topic—especially when our freedoms feel at risk and so many people are suffering from unnecessary cruelty. But I believe that creative connection is more essential now than ever.

Tzivia and I each read a short excerpt from our essays in the new anthology Manna Songs: Stories of Jewish Culture and Heritage.

I invite you to listen and enjoy. Today’s prompt and spiritual practice are all about finding your own moments of connection—to intuition and ancestors, sacred texts and prayer, or simply whatever brings you joy.

Writing Practice: Set aside 5-7 minutes for this practice. Write in a journal or open a ‘Journey with The Season’ document where you can return each Sunday.

Prompt: After listening to our stories, notice what memories or moments surface from your own life. Have you ever received a midnight message, encountered a mysterious messenger, or felt a deep connection to the Divine (or however you imagine God)?
Tell your story. Pour it onto the page. The more we share our stories, the more we grow creativity and connection.

I’d love to read your expressions! Leave a comment here or reach me through the messaging app.

Collage of autumn-themed images: Top left, a quote from Rumi surrounded by colorful fall leaves: ‘Be like a tree. Let the dead leaves drop.’ Top right, a person sitting alone on a wooden bench in a park with fallen leaves around. Center right, simple leaf illustrations labeled ‘Forgiving Myself,’ ‘Embracing Change,’ and ‘Releasing Perfection.’ Bottom left, a journal with floral design resting on a purple cloth on an outdoor table with more benches and fallen leaves in the background. Bottom right, a wide view of a grassy field bordered by trees with autumn foliage, a person walking in the distance under a partly cloudy sky.
Honoring the Autumn Equinox today brings me great joy

Spiritual Practice for the week ahead: Notice the moments when you experience joy. How does it feel in your body? What’s happening in your life that allows joy to enter?

You may want to sketch that moment as a story or journal about it in more detail.
