Dear Friend,
Happy day to you and special love to everyone celebrating Mother’s Day, with all of its complexities. A few months ago, I wrote about the journey of bringing my first child into the world in this essay. Telling the honest stories of mothering and of being a child liberates us to see and integrate both the beautiful and the painful parts of our human experiences.
Mother’s Day may have ancient origins. In Greek mythology, the Goddess Rhea was born from Gaia (Earth) and Uranus (Sky) and she became the mother of the Olympian Gods. Every spring, there were festivals honoring her as a mother. Hhhhhmmmm…

I am inspired by the late scientist James Lovelock, who used the metaphor of the earth as a Great Mother to help us understand our planet as a living organism. He wrote:
I know that to personalize the Earth System as Gaia, as I have often done and continue to do in this book, irritates the scientifically correct, but I am unrepentant because metaphors are more than ever needed for a widespread comprehension of the true nature of the Earth and an understanding of the lethal dangers that lie ahead.”― James Lovelock, The Revenge of Gaia
In honor of Gaia and Rhea and all of the mothers who have brought us here so we have this day, this moment to experience life on earth, let’s express our love for her.
Remember those Mother’s Day templates–maybe you filled one out as a kiddo in elementary school–What I Love About Mom…? (I may be partial to them because all through my early 40s, my kid always wrote that I was 24).
It’s playful, it might feel silly, but today I’m sharing one of those Mother’s Day templates to inspire you to feel, express and honor our Great Cosmic Mother, Gaia, the Earth.
Writing Practice: Set aside 5-7 minutes for this practice. Write in a journal or open a ‘Journey with The Season’ document where you can return each Sunday.
