Dear Friend,
I love this quote by Parker Palmer and have been meditating on these words through the week:
Autumn constantly reminds me that my daily dyings are necessary precursors to new life.
I imagine ‘daily dyings’ as releasing expectations that my life should be a certain way, old stories about myself.
In my life experiences, I am able to let go most often after I’ve battled a really big challenge or faced a loss of some kind. In the last few years, I’ve experienced a lot of that kind of releasing.
Now, I try to invite those ‘daily dyings’ in as a natural process, taking a cue from the natural world.
Today’s creative prompt invites you to explore the landscape around you for some inspiration. Get outside. Pay attention to what’s happening in your autumn.
Then write from your senses about what you’ve witnessed.
Writing Practice: Set aside 5-7 minutes for this practice. Write in a journal or open a ‘Journey with The Season’ document where you can return each Sunday. You can hear me guide you through today’s writing prompt at the arrow above.
Prompt: Go outside! Whether you live in the city, a small town, the country or a suburb, head outdoors.
Take a quiet walk and focus your eyes on the ground. Look at the leaves and whatever else has fallen off of the trees. You might take a photo or two of something that surprises you with its beauty.
When you return to your home, select one of the “letting go” mantras in the image above. Write it on your journal.
Write about what you saw on your nature walk–colors, textures, sizes. Write about what you noticed on the ground.
Write about what the mantra you selected evokes for you (i.e ways you hope to welcome change). Why did you pick that mantra today?
Write about any connections that arise between what you saw outside–and the feelings and energy coming through as you write about your mantra.
I’d love to read your expressions! Leave a comment here or try the messaging app.
Deepening Practice: Take a short walk everyday paying attention to what you see and discover on the earth. Create a collection of leaves, acorns, pinecones…autumn symbols of letting go. Write more about your mantra on another day or select a different one and see what arises.
Wishing you a week of releasing old stuff, welcoming new energy and life! With love, Gabrielle Ariella
